THE BEER: Port Blakely Brown is our dark, complex, English pub ale. A session ale with character, including chocolate, coffee and roasted notes, with low alcohol but a firm body. ESB, Crystal 75 and 120, Special Roast, Pale Chocolate and Carafa III malts. Apollo hops. THE STORY: The Wilkes Expedition named Port Blakely after Captain Johnston Blakely, captain of the USS Wasp in the War of 1812, who, after capturing several prizes, was lost at sea when the Wasp went down in a storm. Port Blakely later became the site of the Hall Brothers shipyard, which at one time was the largest shipyard in the world under one roof, producing enormous tall-ships for service along the West Coast and the Pacific.
