he Legend of the elusive name Sarasota and the Indian Jewel that protects our Coast.
It begins with the love between Indian brave Chichi-Okobee and Sara De Soto, daughter of Hernando Desoto. When Chichi-Okobee was near death, Sara nursed him back to health. Unfortunately he and his medicine men were not able to bring her back to health after she became ill and later died. With 100 warriors Okobee and Desoto searched for the most beautiful body of water as a final resting place. When found, Okobee and the warriors destroyed their canoes with tomahawks. The warriors and leader rested on the bottom of the bay, a perpetual guard to Sara’s grave (The Indian Jewel). Now known as Sarasota Bay, it is said the Indian Jewel guards us from severe storms.
