Developed in the early 1900s, Barley Wine is a classic English beer style that derives most of its character from the grain itself. We celebrate this heritage with a version based on a single variety of heirloom barley malt: Maris Otter. Aged in oak bourbon barrels for several months, Mayflower Barley Wine Style Ale is a rich and complex brew that will warm your soul.

Mélange #10 was created at a special blending competition held in December of 2014 by a pair of Hoarders Society members. Based on the flavors of their childhood, this beer is intended to mimic some of the rich and slightly spicy character of a Mexican-style hot chocolate. Using a blend of our bourbon barrel-aged Anniversary ale and a bourbon barrel aged variation of our barleywine, Old Richland, they were able to create a perfect base beer with which to play. Ancho chiles, chocolate and cinnamon sticks compliment the vanilla and toffee notes from the malty beer, reminding us of our abuela with each sip.

Our Mélange series is a playground for exploring flavors that cannot be achieved outside of the art of the blend or by any one beer. We had a particularly good time playing with nuts and BBLs in this winning blend of barrel-aged beers from our 2016 staff blending competition. Fueled by cheeseburgers and inspired by rocky road, we folded walnuts, cacao nibs from TCHO and vanilla into rich, bourbon barrel-aged barleywine and old ale to mimic the flavors of the rich, nutty dessert. Lactose was added to impart a marshmallow character and an extra creamy mouthfeel. We’re pretty nuts about it, and we think you will be too.

Melange #9 was created by your peers at a special blending competition held in November 2013 for our Hoarders Society members at the time. Each team was given access to a slew of our barrel aged beers and were allowed to bring in pretty much any ingredient of their own to add to the mix. The winning blend is a sour ale, using both our sour blonde ale and Sour in the Rye, with a hint of sweetness from White Oak Sap. Coconut and fresh ginger was added to the blend just a few days before packaging, generating a super fresh, tropical spice.

Midnight Brett is chocolate brown in color, brewed with 2-Row, Midnight wheat, raw wheat and rye malt. It was hopped with a blend of Perle, Glacier and Simcoe hops. The beer was fermented with our house strain of Brettanomyces in stainless tanks. The finished beer has the aroma and flavor of fresh berries, sour cherries and a slight roasted character. The finish is pleasantly tart and fruity making this beer very drinkable.

Misery is light amber in color with a thin, persistent, white head and enticing aroma of grains, fruits and candy. Like all Wheat Wines, Misery boasts a smooth, creamy mouthfeel and a strong 11.2% ABV well hidden by an agonizingly delicious mix of malt and fruit flavors.

Thar she blows! This double version of our Bottom Up Wit is one that will keep you warm on a cold night out at sea. The use of coriander, sweet and bitter orange peel, and Belgian yeast creates strong aromas of citrus zest and spice to begin your journey, leading you into the Pilsner and wheat malt base of this strong wit. Notes of orange peel, coriander, clove, and alcohol dance on your tongue before a slight bitterness from Czech Saaz hops send you down into the depths of Davy Jones' locker.

No. 15, much like a certain fabled two-piece candy bar of our youth, rich, dark chocolate notes accented with aromatic toasted coconut. What would add depth and character to this already delicious combo, we wondered? The answer is time (6 months) well spent in the very best rum barrels available.

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops. After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%. It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time. Food Matches Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.
