Winter Wheat

We’ve been making wheat beers since the summer of 1984. They’ve all been golden summer refreshers instead of dark winter warmers – until now. Anchor Winter Wheat is made with a unique blend of malted barley and five wheats from Belgium, Germany, the Midwest, and a family farm just 75 miles away, where we get our soft red winter wheat. Sown in November and harvested in June, it is used in artisanal flatbreads, cakes and pastries. In 1848, California farmers forsook their amber grain for golden fortune. By 1878, California wheat was back big-time, winning gold at the Paris International Exposition. There was a even a wheat beer brewery in North Beach, one mile from our first home. Today, the robust flavor, malty complexity, enticing aroma, ebony color, and thick creamy head of Anchor Winter Wheat reflect this delicious heritage. Cheers!

Winter Wheatwine

The Winter Wheatwine is brewed in a style similar to a Barleywine, but uses 60% wheat in place of barley. The recipe was inspired by the late Jim Pell who, while attempting a batch of home brew, came up with a wheat ale that was over 10% ABV...WHEW! This was a big mistake for him, but one we have been proud to carry on in his memory since 1988. Though malty in flavor and dark in color, it is relatively light bodied and has a dry and refreshing finish. A select combination of the world’s finest caramel, pale and black malts give Winter Wonder its delicious roasted flavors and aromas, reminiscent of chocolate, coffee and dried fruit.

Winter-Bock

The recipe for this beer goes right back to monastery traditions. The complex triple mash process using four types of malt gives the dark “doppelbock” its characteristic malty dominance and its close to black color. The storage time of 16 weeks produces a pronounced, well-rounded taste. Despite a high original wort content, the sweetness that is frequently present with doppelbocks can scarcely be detected. The first taste is of mild fullness with an accompanying coffee tone, which becomes more dominant with the aftertaste. Between November and January you can allow yourself to be completely won over by the excellent quality of the Winterbock.

Winterfest

Warm up with a cold one. Ask anybody from this part of the country about Midwestern winters, and they’ll tell you that cold is just the beginning. Our cold season includes sleet, slush, ice and wind swept snow. What does all this have to do with beer, you ask? Well, all that inclement weather can turn midwesterners into pretty dedicated homebodies during the winter, and nothing goes better with a warm fire and a good book than our Winterfest IPA.
