There was a time when children ran around loose and fearless, getting filthy and being perfectly reckless. Kids kicked the crap out of each other and instantly let it go, they built unsafe structures to call their own and lived far more free of the burden of being broken. At some point helmets took over, little hands made cel phone calls to check in and parental reign created a claustrophobic, false sense of safety. In remembering a time when kids ran wild, we brewed The Hammer, The Bullet, & The Vise. A nutty and soft english brown beer brewed with all German malts to lull your mind.

Imagine yourself deep in the metaphorical woods, laying metaphorical traps down to capture your metaphorical prey. You've got your sites set on the ravin, which you've been chasing for some time now, almost to the point of obsession. But as time elapses, and you find your thoughts drifting into the void, certain things rearrange, and the tables have turned. You're no longer the hunter, you're now the game, and you've been captured by your former prey. Such a story, not to mention the song by the same name, was part of the inspiration for The Hunter gets Captured by the Game. For the brew, we blended smoked malts with caraway, laurel, and rosemary for an aromatic feast of a 6% ABV ale. The end result is herb-heavy, in both the nose and taste. This complex beast of a beer heads your way in a few short days, and pairs great with food of all sorts.

With a bright, golden color and tight creamy head, the earthy wood undertones in our Gose develop into a light mineral aroma with a hint of lemon zest and tropical fruit. Before boiling, the wort is kettle soured with lactobacillus, imparting an initial refreshing tartness that gives way to a subtle fullness. Flavors of guava and peach are followed by a slight sea salt dryness and lemon sourness that is enhanced by coriander and post-fermentation additions of salt. The finish is dry, effervescent, and lemon tangy, reminiscent of a fresh sea breeze.

This Imperial Porter is brewed in memory of our neighbor and label artist's best four-legged friend, Thor. Thor was a big, floppy, and smiley mastif who loved going on walks to the brewery, and parking his slobbery head down on the sidewalk to smell what's cooking. A portion of all proceeds from The Mighty Thor benefit the Great Lakes Mastif Rescue.

Simcoe and Calypso hops take the lead in this beer. This beer is crisp with some twang, the combination of the wheat, yeast and hops leave a dank aftertaste.

The Portly Gentleman doesn't worry about having one, two, or even three more beers. He knows he'll walk off those calories along the St Patty's Day parade route! This beer pours black, it's thick and creamy and smells of dark roasted barley, chocolate and oats. This beer is the craic! Sláinte!

This traditional straw colored Belgian Farmhouse ale is brewed with pilsen malt and authentic yeast from one of Belgium’s classic saison brewers. Malty yet dry, spicy and floral notes make this complex ale super drinkable and a conversation starter.

The Wanderer is a special blend of oak aged ales that we made with Craig and Beth from San Francisco's City Beer Store. Blending a mix of sour ales and our anniversary ale the base of this beer has a delightfully sour tinge on top of a hearty malt backbone. To add to the flavor, Craig and Beth selected blackberries and bing cherries to be added to the ale adding to it's already fruity complexity. This ale went on to win the silver medal for wood & barrel aged sour fruited ales at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival.

The Wizard is Short’s first Barleywine. From its batch number, to its identical boil time of 6 hours and 66 minutes, this deep, dark amber ale holds some epic warming flavor. A monstrous malt bill creates a full bodied beast of a beer with high residual malty sweetness. These colossal flavors are then enhanced by ample additions of raisins during fermentation.

There Will Be Black builds a hoppy dark tower on a foundation of solid British pale and crystal malts, constructs a midsection of American and German black malts and then sends a spire of New Zealand hops vaulting into the low-hanging clouds. Sharp and snappy, full-bodied but dry, There Will Be Black has a core of black bread and dark chocolate, wrapped in a bright coat of orangey, minty hops. This beer knows the night. This beer will be awesome with your burger, revelatory with your chicken molé, and intends to marry your lamb vindaloo. We think you’ll approve.

An Earth focused seasonal. We age this orange hued ale on the tips of three secret varieties of flowers. We promised not to give up our secret on this beer, because it's just too good! Authentically Belgian Style and only available as the weather warms and flowers begin to bloom.

A few times a year we cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses. Always handcrafted, the bottle you hold is brewed for the adventurous soul. This is a very limited edition and we make no promises to ever brew this style again. Our 2012 Barley Wine bridges continents of style, a harmonious creation of Diploma Master Brewer Daniel Carey. He personally chose the hop fields that were harvested for this powerful beast of a brew. Styrian Golding, Willamette, Columbia, and Sterling with bold citrus and resin notes. All perfectly balanced with toasty graham cracker flavors of floor malted barley. Savor this very big beer at 45° F and it will reward you with an open embrace.
