Old No. 23 Barley Wine

An annual Bristol tradition, Old No. 23 revives an English farmhouse brewery practice of making a complex ale to set aside for special occasions. Our version, while painstaking and time-consuming to brew, rewards the connoisseur with an ale that has the depth and complexity of a good brandy or single malt scotch. Massive quantities of malt and hops, a long aging time and limited availability make this a special ale worthy of its reputation.

Old North State Stout

Stout began as a porter style beer in London, England and originally described a beer that was stronger and drier than the sweeter porters. Old North State Stout is made with roasted, pale and caramel malts and English hops. Together they combine to make a full flavored ale with notes of dark chocolate.

Old Odense Ale

A Danish Sour Gruit ale based on a 15th century recipe, this ale is a collaboration between Sam Calagione and Anders Kissmeyer from Norrebro Bryghus Brewery in Copenhagen. Ingredients included pale and dark barley malt, oats, fine syrup (maple syrup from Sam's dad's farm in Massachusetts), smoked dark syrup, fir branches and bark, wood sage, hyssop, blackthorn berries, woodruff, and star spice. The beer has a bright copper color with a very sparse and fragile head. The aroma is extremely complex and spicy, with notes of anise, tobacco, brettanomyces, leather and dried fruits. The body is rich and with a delicate sweetness that balances the sour tartness, making it far more accessible than a Belgian lambic, which would be the only well known style to which one could possible remotely compare Old Odense Ale. This beer, which pretty much defies any known style or category (if pressed, you could remotely compare it to a Belgian Lambic).

Old Potentate is a British style Old Ale made with Thomas Fawcett and & Sons Marris Otter malt as a base. British and Belgian Crystal malts round out the malt bill. The dominant hop profile is that of East Kent Golding. Both taste and aroma are of rich caramel, fruitcake and a slight nuttiness. Subtle spice and earthiness play a second role in the finish. The beer is very malty, but well balanced by the hops.

Old Powderhouse

A grand old wheatwine made with Massachusets malted wheat A tribute to the history and stature of the famous Somerville landmark, ‘Old Powderhouse Wheat Wine’ features a varietal of hard, red winter wheat that was grown at Four Star Farms in Northfield, MA and malted by Valley Malt in Hadley, MA. Praised by artisanal bakers, the flavors contributed by this hardy grain are earthy and complex helping to create a robust and powerful beer worthy of its name and the history to which it pays homage. For hops, only domestic varieties were used for ‘Old Powderhouse,’ combining perfectly with the rich flavors in the wheat for a bright and wonderfully aromatic beer reminiscent of fresh, ripe fruit. On the dry side for a beer of its strength and style, ‘Old Powderhouse’ is remarkably drinkable at 11% ABV with only subtle hints of alcohol coming through the fruity bouquet during the finish.

Since it is not heavily hopped, it is not very bitter. Therefore, a lot of people who would otherwise avoid dark beers will enjoy this beer. The alcohol content by volume is 7 percent. If you like Old Rag Mountain Ale, check out what they say about the Oak Barrel Conditioned version (a Platinum Medal Winner!!)! Traditionally an English style, restrained and lightly hopped, modern craft brewers have tended to throw buckets and buckets of hops removing any form of detectable subtleties from the yeast and malt. We’ve pegged our hopping rate back, somewhat, to produce a beer with balance and heightened drinkability.
