Old Bums and Beast Cowboys

Inspired by: Jack Kerouac's On The Road When we decided to open our brewery on Colfax Ave we immediately turned to books about the area as we were crafting and naming our first beers. What better than Jack Kerouac's classic tale which spends plenty of time on our favorite wickedest main street in America. Our first beer is a sessionable pale ale that's sure to elicit a "wicked grin" similar to Sal's when he finally sets his eyes upon the city of Denver in On the Road. Malt: Maris Otter, Munich, C 80, Honey Malt Hops: Apollo, Citra, Amarillo Brewer Notes: Small Apollo addition with 30 minutes left in the boil. Citra added with 5 minutes remaining. Dry hopped with Amarillo.

Old Burton Extra

Old Ale often refers to either a sweeter version of a Barley-Wine Style Ale or an aged version of what a brewery might call English Strong or Stock Ale. Burton Ale was Burton-upon-Trent’s signature beer before Pale ale and IPA. Originally, in the early 1800s, it was dark, made with brown malt–as pale malt was yet to be widely used–reasonably hopped, and fairly sweet with alcohol ranging from 7-12% abv. Brewers Michael Bass, Samuel Allsopp and William Worthington made good money shipping these beers to Russia and the Baltic but as the English Baltic trades fell apart in the early 1800s, and as trends at home went towards more hop-forward "pale ales" and "IPAs" made for the East India Company, Burton Ales became paler in color, drier in finish, and more heavily hopped, increasing to as much as 1-2 pounds per barrel of exclusively Fuggles and Goldings hops. As this new version of strong Burton Ale made it to London it was referred to as "Olde" or "Olde Burton": Thus, we present to you "Old Burton Extra:" A large ale of considerable strength (8.9%abv), hopped with 1 pound per barrel Goldings in the kettle (77 IBUS) and another pound per barrel of Fuggles dry-hop, this ale drinks with huge citrus fruit esters, dark candied fruit, considerable dry bitterness, and faint notes of spicy hop, caramel, and fruitcake. But watch out because as the old 19th century song goes,

Old Crafty Hen

A finely balanced beer with a distinctive rich malty taste and fruity aroma, Old Speckled Hen has attracted many fans, including the fox, who is always on the hunt for his Hen. First brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and affectionately named after an old MG car used as a factory runaround 'the owld speckled un'. This turned into Old Speckled Hen when the beer was unveiled. Old Speckled Hen has a full, smooth flavour and is very easy to drink. Its rich amber colour and superb fruity aromas are complemented by a delicious blend of malty tastes. Toffee and malt combine with bitterness on the back of the tongue to give a balanced sweetness, followed by a refreshingly dry finish.

Old Crustacean Barleywine

In Britain, seasonal brews for winter are high in alcohol, robust, malty, and dark. The two main styles of these brews are Old Ales and Barleywines. As the name suggests, barleywines are similar to wines in alcohol and need aging but are derived from grain, not the grape. Rogues barleywine is described by beer expert Stuart Ramsey as: \A masterful robust malty and dark. The cognac of beers. A hugh beer in a little bottle this is a beer designed for sipping. Old Crustacean is brewed with eight ingredients Great Western Harrington Klages Hugh Baird Carastan and Munich Malts Chinook and Centennial Hops free-range coastal water and PacMan yeast. Old Crustacean is best when aged for one year. Old Crustacean is available in a new 750-ml ceramic swingtop bottle (replacing the much older 7-ounce and more recent 12 ounce XS-line package) and on draft.""

Old Ebenezer

Back in merry old England, locals like Old Ebenezer (Scrooge after his enlightenment) celebrated special events by breaking out a brew called barleywine. The Brits crafted these ales from all their favorite English barley and hops in larger quantities to make stronger brews worthy of celebration. In this tradition we made our version with a nearly a ton of malt, English Phoenix and Kent Golding hops, and a British sense of celebration. Join us in a toast to good "Old Ebenezer".
