Jackhammer Old Ale

This strong ale has a clear alcohol presence, a complex fruity palate, and a dry, spicy, rather assertive hop counterbalance in the finish. It was first brewed and named during the demolition of the old Fourth and Washington parking structure when downtown felt like Jurassic Park and all of its neighbors needed something a little stronger to get us through! The Michigan Microbrewery and Brewpub Guide calls it, “an excellent, true-to-style beer with a subtle yet distinct chocolate covered cherry quality.” When the snow flies and the winter winds begin to howl, we seem to instinctively put away the lighter quenching brews of summer and fall in favor of something richer and more substantial. This robust winter warmer is the perfect brew for curling up in front of the fire or providing a little liquid courage before braving the elements.

Jackson’s ESB

ESB, short for extra special bitter, is an English style ale characterized by a rich caramel malt flavor and assertive hoppiness. In Britain, most ales are bitters which are organized by strength into ordinary, special and extra special. The fruity undertones in the flavor of Jackson’s ESB are provided by an imported English yeast. The alcohol content is 5.7%. Jack’s Java - Espresso Stout

Dave Fafara, Roastmaster at Shenandoah Joe, right across the street from Three Notch’d came up with a special three roast coffee blend just for this beer. The coffee beans are cold infused allowing the fresh flavor and aroma to dominate without the acidity. All of this is backed by a rich and hearty oatmeal stout with a great semi-sweet-baking-chocolate-like sweetness.

Jacobus RPA

Jopen Jacobus is a Rye Pale Ale. It is amber in colour and has a fruity bitterness thanks to the use of American hops. The rye malt gives the beer a distinct flavour. Jopen Jacobus RPA is named after the former Jacobskerk. Jopen took over this church for use as a brewery, grand café and restaurant and renamed it the Jopenkerk. This beer was developed in 2011 on occasion of the church’s centenary. Jacobus was the patron saint of the pilgrims. During their pilgrimages, they spent their nights in guesthouses. These guesthouses were exempt from the payment of levies as long as they brewed beer with rye. This is why Jacobus is a Rye Pale Ale. A beer with body.

Jacque's Trappe

Jacque was an intrepid boy. He was always exploring. One day he fell into a Trappe. A dirty trappe. A dirty Jacque’s Trappe. This may be as close to elegant as you’re ever going to get out of us. This Belgian Trippel was made with a huge load of pilsener malt and a generous helping of candi sugar fermented thoroughly by a Belgian Trappist yeast strain. The result is a crisp, clean flavor with just enough candy sweetness to tickle the palate without being cloying and a variety of fruity flavors from the yeast. The alcoholic burn is also ever so slightly present. Post fermentation, we aged this beer on French oak to further dry the perception and to add the spicy, vanilla notes characteristic of that wood. Please, try on our Jacque’s Trappe. We cleaned it.

Jacques Au Lantern

Our fall seasonal is an amber ale brewed with pumpkin and spices. We add roasted pumpkin to the mash and traditional pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, clove, and mace) to the kettle to generate the classic "pumpkin ale" flavors. We then ferment with a Belgian strain of yeast which accentuates the spices already added to the beer. Served unfiltered, the result is a unique twist on the classic pumpkin ale, blending the expected, traditional flavors with unexpected depth of character.

What were the scientific purposes of barrel aging our imperial Dry-Irish Stout, The 2014 GABF Bronze Medal winner, 2014 L.A. International Beer Competition Silver Medal winner, 2015 L.A. International Beer Competition Gold Medal winner… It is an awesome beer! This vintage is an Imperial Dry Irish Stout aged in freshly emptied Breckenridge Distillary and Four Roses Barrels. Notes of coffee, chocolate, raisens, dark fruit, vanilla, coconut, almond, and assertive oak tannins make this beer the most award winning, complex and dangerously drinkable beer we brew. Three thousand feet above sea level in the misty mountains of Jamaica, some of the world’s finest Arabica beans are hand picked on their way to becoming Blue Mountain Coffee. Jai Alai Cedar Aged India Pale Ale

The Humidor Series is a rotating offering of Cigar City Brewing beer aged on cedar. Cedar has a more subtle effect on beer than more traditional woods like oak. But, we think that once you taste it you'll agree that cedar deserves a place alongside oak in the brewer's wood-aging toolbox.

Jake's Big Honey Saison

Saisons were originally rustic farm house brewed beers using the available grains and ingredients from the farm itself to provide a refreshing beverage for the tired workers. They have gradually evolved to higher alcohol levels as well as being lightly spiced in addition to the natural fruit and spice character from the yeast. We intended to add a smaller amount of local honey to add some character as well as increase the potential alcohol, esters and flavors while finishing with a lighter body than an all malt brew of similar strength. Jake, the assistant brewer, misunderstood and added a full pail to our pilot brewery’s kettle.
