Anchor, already a pioneer in craft brewing, moved to San Francisco's Potrero Hill in the late 1970s. In 1993, we repurposed a small corner of our brewery and began distilling whiskey from a mash of 100% rye malt. We call it Old Potrero®. Although we've experimented with beer and hops in the distillery, we've never used rye or sour mash in the brewery—until now. This Zymaster, Potrero Hill Sour-Mash IPA, begins in our distillery, where we prepare a 100% rye malt mash just as we would for our rye whiskey. After transferring it to a small open fermenter, we pitch the yeast and wait. Five days later, we mash it in the brewhouse, using a blend of pale barley malt and rye malt. Then we add the sour mash from the distillery, which lowers the pH of our brewery mash. By introducing sour mash before the boil instead of after it, we are able to create tartness in this brew without sourness. In the brewkettle, we use four additions of Nelson Sauvin, a dual-purpose hop from New Zealand. We also dry-hop with Nelson, which creates Zymaster 7's unique tropical aroma. An English ale yeast contributes dry, clean flavors.

Aged for a year in Oregon pinot noir barrels, our dark Belgian-style ale develops complex flavors reminiscent of dried fruit, vanilla and sherry. The French oak provides tannic counterbalance to the syrupy dark candi sugar. And like its unaged counterpart, its vibrant reddish-black hue, substantial body and pleasant headiness give it an alluring first impression—but watch your back. This beer has done hard time.

Tough Love is bold but nuanced, an homage of sorts to the traditional Russian Imperial Stouts and the ruling style of Catherine the Great. We construct it with dark roasted malts, malted rye, and oak-smoked wheat, and then banish it in Kentucky bourbon barrels. The aging process smooths out the edges on an otherwise bold statement, and bitterness succumbs to tender strokes of vanilla beans, hints of dried cherries, and new layers revealing themselves with each sip.

If you want something spicy then you've found the right beer. We "dry hop" our Photuris Pale Ale with an abundant amount of Jalepenos and Cilantro to give it a nice burn in the back of your throat and a mouth watering aroma.

¡Poblamo! is the latest in our farm bounty lineup, utilizing freshly fire roasted Poblano chiles straight from the field. Infused into a base of a malty and balanced amber ale, the roasted notes of the chiles dominate the aroma of this beer. The depth of maltiness and rich fruity flavors provide a solid canvas to present the bold flavor profile of the chiles. While having a lively tingle on the tongue, the heat level remains subdued and pleasant the whole glass through.

Of culinary inspiration, fresh green jalapeño flavor (without the heat!!) is balanced perfectly with Citra, Simcoe & Amarillo hops. Drop a slice or two of fresh jalapeño pepper into your glass or growler to enhance the freshness, add some heat & remind you to "Live Green!!"

American Pale Ale featuring new world hops and an authentic historic English Pale grain bill. Our flagship – great as a session beer, but definitely unique as our 1885 grain bill brings out a wonderful biscuit flavor that is lacking in most modern APAs. This beer will also serve as a base for some of our seasonal releases – including a version with authentic Northern Indian garam masala spices.

Red and pale malted wheat, aromatic hops, lemon grass and orange peel gives this ale a unique twist on classical wheat beers. The addition of blood oranges late in the brewing process yields an unmistakable conflict of sweet & tart, resulting in an amazingly enjoyable beer.

Massive amounts of hops (3x the amount that goes in the IPA!!!) are needed to counter the massive grain bill that goes into this one! A very smooth and well rounded experience.

Pumperkin was the name of the original Pumpkin Ale of the Colonial Americans in the 17th Century, but don’t think this is your Great, Great, Great Grandfather’s secret recipe! Originally a collaboration with Sehkraft Brewing in Arlington, this 7% ale branches out from the traditional pumpkin beers by combining the flavors of Fall with what we do best, a deliciously crafted IPA! Pumperkin is a Pumpkin IPA or PIPA, spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice showcasing an earthy bite only provided by traditional English hops.
