The American Imperial IPA style was developed and made popular by west coast American brewers. The style is most often characterized by a gold or copper color, citrus hop character, big malt body and lingering bitterness.

Yeah, we know. It sounds contradictory but in fact, Imperial Milds, otherwise known as “XXX” ales, date back to 19 century England. We don’t have much reference as to what these historical ales tasted like, but we like to think this is a close representation. Briefly aged in 2nd generation Bourbon barrels to impart traditional oak-cask flavors; lightly hopped for mild-like drinkability; and made with a mix of bready English malts for an intensely rich flavor. This has quickly become one of our Head Brewer’s favorite beers and we sincerely hope you enjoy it too.

Even more of a good thing! The combination of four different malts, along with a low hop level creates a deep dark beer featuring rich, sweet roasted flavors. The addition of lactose (milk sugar) adds complexity, body, and a residual sweetness lending a smooth creamy texture to this full-flavored and now full bodied brew.

An Imperial version of one of our Favorites! Mugshot, our Brown Rye Porter, has been amped up to 9.1 ABV. While it's got plenty of extra kick, it still has that same smooth flavor with hints of coffee, chocolate and a dry spice note on the finish.

Just like our regular Oka Uba, the Imperial version has almost a sweet malt flavor that is followed by strong American hops. This beer is dry hopped with two varieties of hops to give it an amazing hop forward profile.

When ya think about it, calling any PILS an IMPERIAL PILS is somewhat ironic. At the time of its creation in the dim recesses of post-stone-age / pre-X-box European city states the PILSENER style was indeed the IMPERIAL beer of its time, putting every other more colorful beer of its time to shame amidst a revolution of thermometer making. And without a doubt; its reign was long. Now American-born ales have usurped all of the imperialness there is to usurp and for the PILS to rise again, like every aspiration-ridden social ladder-climb-ing creature on the planet it must furthur evolve... This is that! We have made our own not-so-ordinary PILS every week of every year since 1996 and we have come to respect its stature in our own brewery-world..but Darwin never sleeps. Evolution persists, the weak are meat and the strong will eat, and now this brew has happened... furthur, further, furthur...
