Let’s be honest: You’re probably more likely to take illegal substances while you listen tothe heavy metal band Mastodon. But Mastodon and their crew had the opportunity to get shitfaced legally while they were playing the recent Sonisphere stop in Hockenheim, Germany on Saturday. Stephan Michel of Mahr’s Brau brewery created a limited edition Mastodon Premium Lager that was handed out to Mastodon and their crew at the show.

ALASKANA series: Eight beers will debut in 2014 but this series is designed as an ongoing experience to represent “life in Alaska.” Additional beers will be created in this series and our favorites will be re-produced. “As in all areas of the world, Alaska has its own vernacular — a unique array of terms that describe life in the Great Land. Inspired by these quirky terms, Midnight Sun is presenting some favorites in the form of beer. So whether you live in Alaska or Outside, let your taste buds interpret our language via your glass. MATANUSKA THUNDER FUNK: Playing with the name of a high potency strain of marijuana from the Matanuska Valley region of Alaska, we changed one letter to call our beer “Matanuska Thunder Funk.” And funky this beer is! Beginning as a Belgian-style Saison, MTF was transferred to oak barrels and inoculated with Brettanomyces for a long-many months. This batch created a mother funk, which will be blended with a fresh batch of saison to balance and soften the grassy/green apple/sweaty horse blanket character of Brettanomyces. MTF is heavy on the funk in a way laid back way.

Quaffable sweet stout made with Townshend's Matcha (a powdered green tea), which was added at several stages during brewing.

A blend of chocolate, roast, and coffee with a rich mouthfeel and excellent draw. Dark chocolate and coffee blend together to create a hints of mocha while the roasty elements help to split the sweetness. A perfect blend of both worlds.

Contains caffeine and uses a South American yeast for a well balanced smokey flavor.

Hopped with six different American hop varieties and four pounds of hops per barrel, this triple IPA has aromas of orange marmalade, ripe melon, and lemon zest. The flavor is full of rich orange flesh with herbal piney jabs that linger endlessly.

Crystal, Munich and a dash of roasted barley with 100% Northwest Centennial hops gives Matt's its color and malty-spicy balance. Big but gentle.
