Single Fin

Single Fin is a Belgian-style Blonde Ale. This beer is modeled after a Belgian Single or Enkel which is a low-alcohol table beer for monks in Trappist monastery. They are traditionally brewed for daily consumption and can be difficult to find beyond the walls of the monastery. The concept behind Single Fin was to make available locally a low alcohol, but flavorful beer that retained the traditional profile and body of a Trappist-style beer.

Single Hop Series - Apollo

Apollo hops are known for their high alpha acid content, between 15% – 19%, and are typically used for its bittering qualities. This hop varietal was developed at the Hopsteiner Breeding Program from 2 experimental varietals; the new hop was further crossed with Zeus hops, and Apollo was born. Apollo has a resinous hop flavor, with citrus notes, some earthy qualities, and a spiciness that may be apparent in the finish. The aroma features some orange and grapefruit citrus qualities with an earthy and slight spice note.

Single Hop Series - Belma

Belma is the newest entry into the Hermitage Brewing Company family of single hop IPAs. This hop varietal is a dual purpose hop, meaning it can be used for bittering and/or flavoring/aromatic purposes. Belma has an alpha acid range from 10.4% – 11.6%. This hop varietal gets its name from the tiny community of Belma, just northeast of Mabton, Washington. The name “Belma” was coined by T.W Howell, a Mabton realtor. Howell’s mother was a big fan of the song Sweet Belle Mahone and would often combine the lyrics “Belle” and “Mahone” into “Belma”. Belma hops can exhibit the orange, grapefruit, pineapple, strawberry and melon flavors and aromas. Belma has an assertive hop bitterness that doesn’t linger long on the palate.

Single Hop Series - Citra

Citra is the most well received in our series of Single Hop beers. After taking Gold in 2011 and 2012 at the California Craft Brew Competition, and due to its high demand with our consumers, we decided to make this a year-round style. This IPA pours a dark amber in color with an off-white head. The hop aroma is floral, with citrus notes, while the malts have a toasted barley character with some caramel. Citra‘s hop flavor is resiny, with some citrus quality that is offset by toasty malt flavors with a touch of caramel. This is a moderately full bodied beer, with a bright carbonation, and a dry finish.

Single Hop Series - El Dorado

El Dorado is a dual-purpose American hop varietal. El Dorado is a high alpha acid hop, which provides plenty of bitterness while its flavor and aroma profile consists of tropical fruit characteristics. Pear, watermelon candy, and stone fruit have also been noted. HBC Lead Brewer Greg Filippi has this to say about El Dorado.

Single Hop Series - Galaxy

It’s not too often we rebrew a single hop IPA, but when we do, it’s because it’s too delicious not to. Thankfully, Galaxy falls into this category. This hop varietal was developed, and is exclusively grown, in Australia. Galaxy was developed from Perle hops bred with a high alpha acid female hop grown in Australia; the resulting hop has an alpha acid content that ranges from 11% – 16%. Galaxy hops are typically used as late additions to accentuate its flavor and aromatic qualities. As a hop varietal, Galaxy has citrus, peach, and passion fruit flavors. Our IPA has a hop aroma that has a grapefruit-like citrus quality with a slight tropical fruit character. The flavor has grapefruit-like citrus notes and a touch of guava with some stone fruit character. Galaxy has an assertive hop bitterness that lasts well into the finish.

Single Hop Series - Magnum

German Magnum hops are a high alpha acid hop believed to have low flavor and aromatic qualities. Because of this, Magnum hops are prized for the “clean” bitterness they impart to beers and are typically used just for bittering. Here at HBC, we wanted to challenge this preconception and see what qualities Magnum imparts when used in late hop additions and in dry hopping.

Single Hop Series - Mandarina Bavaria

Mandarina Bavaria is a fairly new hop, grown in Hull, Germany. It has only been available to brewers since 2012. Its lineage is the Cascade hop and is Germany’s answer to the fruit-forward New World hops like Citra and Galaxy. Mandarina imparts fantastic Satsuma mandarin orange flavor. It has a nice, fruity aroma and is an all-around great hop to stand alone in a Single Hop IPA.

Single Hop Series - Mosaic

Released in 2012 for public consumption by Hop Breeding Company, LLC, Mosaic is the most recent addition to our single hop IPA family. This hop varietal is the daughter of Simcoe and another hop varietal derived from Nugget. While Mosaic is primarily used for its aromatic qualities, it can be used for bittering as well. Flavors include tropical mango, orange blossom and fresh peach or nectarine. It also boasts woodsy and piney elements. At 11-13% alpha acid, the hop bitterness it provides our beer is assertive but short lasting on the tongue, yet it has the bitterness you’d expect from a North American hop variety. Mosaic hops truly are just that: a mosaic of tastes and aroma for your palate to enjoy. With its fruit-forward notes, it’s also perfect for a summer release.

Single Hop Series - Sorachi Ace

Sorachi Ace is the another IPA in our Single Hop Series, released late Fall 2012. The Sorachi Ace hop varietal was developed for Japanese brewery Sapporo but American craft breweries have since taken a liking to this unique hop with its complex aroma and flavor characteristics. Sorachi Ace pours a deep amber color with an off-white head. Its aroma is a mixture of its characteristic lemony citrus character as well having woody, minty, and ginger notes. The beer’s toasted malt flavors, with a touch of caramel, is balanced against the Sorachi Ace’s piney and citrusy hop flavor. Hop bitterness is assertive without being overwhelming. This is a moderately full bodied beer, with medium-high carbonation, and dry finish that leaves you wanting more of this unique hop!
