Embrace the change of seasons with McMenamins Spring Seasonal, Workingman’s Red. The Vernal Equinox, on March 19, at 10:14 p.m. PDT this year, celebrates the renewed life of the Earth that comes with spring. It is a solar festival, observed when the length of night and day (on the equator, at least) are equal, striking a perfect balance between dark and light. Workingman’s Red is an exceptional beer for the occasion, since its reddish hue strikes a perfect balance between the darker beers of winter and the lighter beers of summer. Its flavor is also perfectly balanced between the sweetness derived from malted barley and the bitterness derived from whole hop cones. The Irish Red style was first brewed in Ireland by Franciscan monks sometime in the 14th century, which was long before stout became the national drink. The use of unmalted roasted barley reflected the Irish tradition of dodging British-imposed malt taxes while adding depth and complexity to the ale's character. It gained appeal as a restorative brew to slake the thirsts of farm hands at harvest time and, later, industrial workers after a day in the factory. An exceptionally drinkable quality characterized this ale. The same can be said for Workingman’s Red, which has a deep mahogany color and a slight, malty sweetness up front. This rich foundation and flavor is surprisingly smooth due to the perfect balance of noble hop flavors. It finishes with a toasty mouth feel and a bold, aromatic hop character that compliments the up front sweetness exquisitely. Workingman’s Red is flavorful enough to satisfy discerning tastes, but still quaffable enough to quench the mighty thirst of the workingman. Strike a balance this spring with Workingman’s Red.

Dark, rich, roasty and complex, World Wide Stout has more in common with a fine port than a can of cheap, mass-marketed beer. Brewed with a ridiculous amount of barley. Have one with (or as!) dessert tonight!

This golden blond Belgian-style ale is a symphony of bold and delicate wrapped into one. We took our 9.8% Belgian-style golden ale and aged it in Grgich Hill Estate Chardonnay barrels. It has a gentle warming with a light alcohol sweetness and a tantalizing fruity character full of apples, pears, and oranges. The barrel aging give it a great Chardonnay character and a dry finish.

This Dortmunder style beer was originally brewed in the area around the city of Dortmund in western Germay. It is a full bodied pale lager that falls beteen the dryness of a German Pilsner and the sweet maltiness of Munich Helles. Brewed with imported German Pilsner malt, Northern Brewer and Hallertau hops. Finished with a late kettle addition of Spalter Select.

Also known as East Side Pale. Worthy’s tip of the hat to East Siders everywhere, this British ESB - American Pale Ale hybrid is a reminder that for the culture “Go West,” but for counter-culture head East.

Red IPA.

A tribute to the cowboys working the ranches of the Santa Ynez Valley, Wrangler Wheat is an unfiltered ale brewed with American-grown wheat and barley malts.  It’s cloudy, straw color, along with wheat proteins and suspended yeast, give this beer a thick, chewy mouth-feel with undertones of tropical fruits and spices, passion fruit, banana and clove.  Dust off your boots and enjoy this ale during your lunch break.

A variety of caramel and chocolate malts are added to a basic pale ale to produce a slightly darker color thus creating our Amber Ale. Richly amber in color, the balance of malt and four different Noble hops makes this filtered ale one of our most popular beers.

This annual favorite is a sublime hybrid of an American style IPA and a winter warmer. The result is a bold brew that celebrates the holidays with an intriguing blend of Centennial hops providing elegant citrus notes balanced by a backdrop of a rich caramel malt body. Dry hopped to amplify the aromas and flavor. Available in 22oz. bottles and draught. Gold medal winner at the 2010 World Beer Championships.

A rather non-traditional collaboration, this beer is the product of musical inspiration. Our good friend Dan Walkner came to us with a test pressing of his brand new album and said, “listen to it, then make a beer” (Being a proper gentleman, he also said please, and thank you). So obviously we saw this as an exciting opportunity and ran with it. The album is fantastic, tough but at times delicate and soothing; gritty but harmonious. The beer was designed to be much of the same; a strong malt bill gives a bold red color and curious nuttiness to set the stage for an assertive hop profile bursting with pine and orange zest. This remains one of our favorite projects and continues to receive requests for recreation.
