Workingman's Red

Embrace the change of seasons with McMenamins Spring Seasonal, Workingman’s Red. The Vernal Equinox, on March 19, at 10:14 p.m. PDT this year, celebrates the renewed life of the Earth that comes with spring. It is a solar festival, observed when the length of night and day (on the equator, at least) are equal, striking a perfect balance between dark and light. Workingman’s Red is an exceptional beer for the occasion, since its reddish hue strikes a perfect balance between the darker beers of winter and the lighter beers of summer. Its flavor is also perfectly balanced between the sweetness derived from malted barley and the bitterness derived from whole hop cones. The Irish Red style was first brewed in Ireland by Franciscan monks sometime in the 14th century, which was long before stout became the national drink. The use of unmalted roasted barley reflected the Irish tradition of dodging British-imposed malt taxes while adding depth and complexity to the ale's character. It gained appeal as a restorative brew to slake the thirsts of farm hands at harvest time and, later, industrial workers after a day in the factory. An exceptionally drinkable quality characterized this ale. The same can be said for Workingman’s Red, which has a deep mahogany color and a slight, malty sweetness up front. This rich foundation and flavor is surprisingly smooth due to the perfect balance of noble hop flavors. It finishes with a toasty mouth feel and a bold, aromatic hop character that compliments the up front sweetness exquisitely. Workingman’s Red is flavorful enough to satisfy discerning tastes, but still quaffable enough to quench the mighty thirst of the workingman. Strike a balance this spring with Workingman’s Red.

World Peace Death Ray Imperial IPA

We’re not big fans of the palate-crushing hop and alcohol levels found in many imperial IPAs, so we set out to brew a tasty treat for the hop loyal that embodies just a bit more finesse. Checking in at a relatively friendly ABV, our imperial is citrusy, pungent and robust, combining a goodly abundance of hops with a malt bill that provides the backbone your trusty palate craves.

World's Worst Twin

World’s Worst Twin is inspired by a favorite coffee of our friend Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø of Evil Twin Brewing. If we just added it to the beer, the subtle nuances of this delicate coffee would have been hopelessly lost. Rather, we sought to recreate its flavors and aromas in our own unique way through wild fermentation in oak barrels with blueberries and wort brewed with rich, toasty malts. Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and 100% bottle-conditioned.

Worry

This golden blond Belgian-style ale is a symphony of bold and delicate wrapped into one. We took our 9.8% Belgian-style golden ale and aged it in Grgich Hill Estate Chardonnay barrels. It has a gentle warming with a light alcohol sweetness and a tantalizing fruity character full of apples, pears, and oranges. The barrel aging give it a great Chardonnay character and a dry finish.

Worst Driver Award Honey Stout

Don't fight it, Spite It! The first beer in our idiot award series is this delightful honey stout. It's made to take your mind off the road rage created by that driver who was either putting their makeup on, texting, or both. They go 5 mph the second the snow hits the ground, many times this is done with a dog on their lap. So when you get home after honking the horn, relax with this stout, brewed with local honey giving it the right amount of flavor. Everyone hates that guy, so don't be that guy.

Worthy Adversary

This Russian Imperial Stout is not exactly a lightweight. It’s about drawing a line in the sand. It has a consistency similar to 5W-30. Adventurous tattoo artists have used it in place of ink. If left outside during winter, it won’t freeze, even in Minnesota. Beneath the shadowy exterior, a swirling ambush of coffee and dark chocolate flavors lurk atop a mountain of malt. For much of the year, the Worthy Adversary lays low, as if beneath the cover of canopy jungle. Don’t leave this aggression unchecked, or you may find it facing you down—eyeball to eyeball.

A refreshing golden ale infused with fresh mint and mango. An abundance of green mint and fruity aromas pour off of this light bodied ale, opening up the senses with a tingling cool freshness. Wrath Of Pecant

Wrath of Pecant is a collaboration between Dogfish and the Alstrom Brothers of Beer Advocate celebrating the 2010 Extreme Beer Fest. We worked with them to come up with the concept for the beer. If you want to read the actual 'making of the beer' converstaion - check it out here! Once we had the beer idea, we let Beer Advocate members vote to name it - the winning name came from BA member 'strangefate.' (find out the long, strange story behind the final name 'Wrath of Pecant' here) So in the end... Wrath of Pecant became a 6% abv brownish ale brewed with pecan-wood smoked malt, plantains, and carob. It is complex yet quaffable; maltiness nuttiness and subtle earthy notes prevail. The beer was first tapped at the 2010 Extreme Beer Fest in Boston in February. The bottles (750ml) were released from the Milton brewery for The Weekend Of Compelling Ales & Whatnot in March of 2010. They are now available for sale from the brewery (and very soon at the brewpub!) and should be around into the summer. There are no plans to distribute this beer outside the state of Delaware. Wren's Bitter

don’t let the name fool you, this is a smooth sessionable English Pale Ale. British Maris Otter malt, and a hint of Continental caramel malt provides a bready malt backbone and East Kent Goldings hops provide the flavorful hop nose. Characterful English yeast leaves a slightly fruity taste that pairs well with the sweet, spicy, floral hops. Balance is to bitterness, but does not overpower the malt flavor, esters and hop flavors of this English classic.

Wrenclaw Red

A rather non-traditional collaboration, this beer is the product of musical inspiration. Our good friend Dan Walkner came to us with a test pressing of his brand new album and said, “listen to it, then make a beer” (Being a proper gentleman, he also said please, and thank you). So obviously we saw this as an exciting opportunity and ran with it. The album is fantastic, tough but at times delicate and soothing; gritty but harmonious. The beer was designed to be much of the same; a strong malt bill gives a bold red color and curious nuttiness to set the stage for an assertive hop profile bursting with pine and orange zest. This remains one of our favorite projects and continues to receive requests for recreation.
