Scratch Beer 10 - 2008

The third time just might be the charm—Scratch #10-2008 is our third triple in the Scratch Beer series. This grand cru has been lovingly aged since late-February, yet still unleashes the slightest hint of alcohol heat. Scratch #10-2008 also has a triple flavor inspiration combining the caramel/toffee notes of dememera sugar and molasses, with citrus and licorice flavors created by the orange peel and star anise; lastly we create a peppery/spicy finish with the same trappist yeast has been used in each Scratch Beer Triple. 18 IBU.

Scratch Beer 11 - 2008

Next up, we present Scratch Beer #11-2008, a Bitter. We used to brew a little number called Tröegs ESB. Even though this beer was retired almost six years ago, we still get numerous Tröegs old-schoolers begging for its return. Well hang onto your boot straps because Scratch #11 is about as close as we can get to the original ESB without firing up the old brew kettle. The Scratch #11 recipe originates from Chris’ stint at England’s University of Sunderland brewing program. After returning to Colorado the brothers drew on Chris’ experience and brewed pilot batches tweaking that recipe. The ESB production recipe has direct bloodlines to these pilot batches. 48 IBU

Scratch Beer 12 - 2008

Released as both Drafting Room 14th Anniversary Ale and Troegs Scratch 12. This bold IPA is brewed with Pils and Vienna malt and Amarillo, Warrior, and Mount Hood hops. It has fresh citrus and pine aromas followed by bold dry hop flavors, a faint nutty malt backing and a tantalizing hop finish that lingers on the tongue.

Scratch Beer 14 - 2008

Scratch #14-2008 is our interpretation of a farmhouse ale—a once near-extinct winter-brewed (and summer–imbibed) Belgian ale. celebratory brew starts with a black pepper and ginger nose. The nicely carbonated brew releases a honey-malt flavor that gives way to a tart crisp finish that masks the elevated ABV. We use a blended yeast strain (Saison Dupont & Le Chouffe) to create the traditional peppery, spicy earthy flavors of the saison. Slight hints of ginger also come through in the finish. Drink it ‘til the wedding bells chime! 25 IBU

We started with the same grain bill as Scratch #12 (IPA) and substituted 25% rye for the base malt giving Scratch #18 a creamy mouth feel and a full-bodied taste. Mount Hood and Chinook hops are combined here for flavoring and aroma, and Warrior hops are used for overall bitterness. The rye plays off the Mount Hood hops, with both ingredients releasing an herbal, spicy flavor.

Scratch Beer 20 - 2009

Scratch #20 has been dubbed Apollo Imperial Ale because of our experimentation with a new hop variety. Apollo hops are high alpha acid with an intense aroma. Married with other high alpha hops, with almost two pounds of hops added per barrel produced, AIA has an intense staying power in the back of the throat. After a long discussion between Chris, John and the brewers, they dubbed this hop flavor stinky grapefruit with a hint of perfume. The dark color might lead you to believe the some malt may shine through; but no, the hops are the true player in this ale. Scratch #20 serves a dual purpose since it will also appear as The Drafting Room’s Anniversary Ale for 2009. We brewed a bit more to serve the brewery and The Drafting Room, but get it while you can.

Scratch Beer 21 - 2009 (Naked Elf)

Naked Elf takes a hard look at the less-is-more theory. Ever since we developed The Mad Elf, we’ve speculated what it would taste like without the cherries and honey. So what lies beneath the fruit? Naked Elf is unfiltered, so the spicy yeast taste is more prominent in this strong, hazy orange ale. The combination of the Pilsner, and Vienna malts give a lot of body and minimal sweetness, but Naked Elf has a dry finish. Finally, the heat of the alcohol makes its presence known in the finish. The Naked Elf’s finest quality is the delicate balancing act between a lively yeast kick and a slight alcohol note that lingers in the back of the mouth—constantly reminding us not to overindulge in this complex, warming elixir.

Scratch Beer 8 - 2008

Revisiting Scratch #3, we take the same Tripel recipe, add beet and cane sugars to the kettle, and run the wort through our hopback brimming with juniper berries, coriander and yarrow flowers. Inspired by the herbaceous nose of gin, the berries and flowers give a slight pine/citrus aroma with floral undertones. Scratch #8 has a dry, yeasty finish and noticeable alcohol warming when consumed.

Sucré Madeira

Note: This entry is for the Madeira barrel aged version. The traditional sixth anniversary gift is candy or sugar, so we’ve named our 6th anniversary ale 'Sucré' which is 'sugar' in French. Sucré is our sixth anniversary ale, loosely brewed in the English-style Old Ale tradition using our house Belgian yeast strain. Layered with complex flavors of dark fruit, vanilla, oak, and burnt sugar, Sucré is a robust ale, surely the perfect beer to mark this major milestone.

The Kimmie, The Yink & The Holy Gose

With a bright, golden color and tight creamy head, the earthy wood undertones in our Gose develop into a light mineral aroma with a hint of lemon zest and tropical fruit. Before boiling, the wort is kettle soured with lactobacillus, imparting an initial refreshing tartness that gives way to a subtle fullness. Flavors of guava and peach are followed by a slight sea salt dryness and lemon sourness that is enhanced by coriander and post-fermentation additions of salt. The finish is dry, effervescent, and lemon tangy, reminiscent of a fresh sea breeze.

Tocobaga Red Ale

The Tocobaga lived off the bounty of Tampa Bay hundreds of years before the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500’s. They were potters, tool makers and the only Florida natives to grow maize. The large platform mounds they built are still with us today, with one of the largest found near Old Tampa Bay in Safety Harbor, Florida. Climb to the top, and with a little imagination, you can see Tampa Bay as they did. Graphic design by Eric Swanson. Recipe by Tim Ogden.

Goose 30th Anniversary Ale

Brewed to celebrate our 30th anniversary, and inspired by our roots of John Hall’s love of English beer, we have collaborated with one of the most respected breweries in the world, Fuller’s of London, to create this Pale Ale that combines styles from both sides of the Atlantic. It uses all English malt, and a bold American dry hop to make a unique beer that truly excites our brewing team. The depth of flavor of biscuit and light caramel malt, joins a hop aroma that evokes oak and coconut, and tropical and citrus fruit. We wanted to deliver something special for our 30th Anniversary, paying respect to tradition, our past, and John’s original inspiration, and also looking forward with bold hop aromas and flavors that our brewers and U.S. craft beer drinkers love. We hope that you enjoy this special collaboration release as much as we do.
