The pilsner style beer (also known as pilsener or simply pils) originated in the scenic city of Plzen, Czechoslovakia in the early 1800's. Pilsners are lager beers, meaning they are brewed with bottom fermenting yeast, and then aged or lagered in cold conditioning tanks. Since their introduction, pilsners have become the most popular style of beer in the world. At Uinta, we have replicated a true old world pilsner by using the finest imported Saaz hops and then aging this golden lager for nearly a month. The aging process creates a smooth, mellow flavor that gives it a remarkable drinkability. Enjoy the delicate balance between the flowery hops and the assertive malt flavors. Where did the name come from? Uinta embraced the concept of renewable energy in 2001 by committing to 100% wind powered energy. The name Blue Sky Pilsner stems from that commitment. Ladyface's indigenous interpretation of an English barleywine is named after the lively, blue-bellied, native lizards that dwell in our backyards. The ale has full-bodied structure and bold toffee malt character is balanced with medium citrus and floral hop qualities, soft hop pine resins that stem from layers of Apollo, Columbus and Bravo hop varietals. American Wild Ale Fermented with Blueberry Juice One mid-summer day, John and a group of furry cohorts we navigating through a blueberry field. Suddenly one of his furry friends, who had just gone through a difficult breakup, started bashing blueberries with a mallet. John said to the creature, "Friend, fret not for we will bring these blueberries back to the brewery and save them for you to snack on later." John put the blueberries by his desk and then forgot about them. As days turned to weeks, the blueberries began to ferment, as stuff by John's desk tends to do. As weeks turned to months, a spicy, almost peppery aromatic began wafting from the corner. Re-discovering the blueberries, John decided to try and make a beer with them. Also because he wanted to play off out like that was his plan the whole time. Now that the beer is here, we can only look back at that faithful day with joy and be thankful about that furious, furry creature.

This NW style sour ale blends wheat and blond ales that were oak aged in barrels for eight months before aging on fresh blueberries for an additional three months. Huge herbal notes of dense blueberries in the nose give way to hints of oak and a dusty floral note. Rich earthy notes of dark fruit on the palate lead to a tart finish that dries out to a base note of blueberry skins.

No, this is not a juice and it`s not blue! It`s a great tasting BEER that put Back Road Brewery on the beer map. Inspired by a trip to Bar Harbor, Maine, this became our second orginal recipe in 1997. The nose picks up the aroma of fresh blueberries, but the mouth tastes an English-style pale ale. Blueberries dance around in your mouth at the finish. Give it a try; you won`t be singing the blues!

Our Kolsch-style beer is used as the base for this recipe. Locally grown blueberries are used in the mash and blueberry syrup in the secondary fermentation. It’s not overpowering, but has just a hint of the sweet and delicious berry that graces us for a short time in the summer.
