This lost beer style that was once a staple in the American beer landscape during the pre-Prohibition era was resurrected by an Ann Arborite named Jeff Renner years ago. It was originally the immigrant brewer’s version of a German Pilsner using American ingredients like 6-row barley and corn, and hops native to the US. We brew ours with advice and guidance from Renner and cold condition it for over two months before serving. Cold and crisp hardly begin to describe this delicious brew.

Strong with body and flavor can ask the one for more. Amber and tangy, it presents itself as a unique Bio - specialty beer from Upper Franconia. We brew our Classic according to strict organic guidelines processors which "bring into the field," the Reinheitsgebot (ie the production of malting barley and hops are regulated by organic). Even in the brewery beyond the Reinheitsgebot demands on the quality of raw materials, the craft brewing process and the naturalness of the beer are provided. Only best Biolandmalze, organic aroma hops and our excellent water may be used for brewing. We are pleased that all these ingredients are grown in excellent quality in our immediate vicinity.

The crisp, smooth Classic Lager is judged to be excellent with food, or by itself. It has a distinct malty smoothness and light amber color. The Classic Lager is the result of superior quality ingredients and award winning hand-crafted attention to excellence. It is expertly double-hopped and then cold conditioned for six weeks.

Brewed with the American Cascade hops, which gives a mild and pleasant bitterness in taste and aroma of citrus, grapefruit and pineapple.

Carbonated mouth feel and sweet apple aroma. This cider is sweet and very easy to drink.

Post-Prohibition Style Ale

Our Sour Ale Program at Upland has been an adventure into the unknown from the beginning. We are proud to share the next leg of our journey with you. The Fresh Oak Brett Project was begun to explore not only the flavors of fresh oak barrels, but to also experiment with available strains of wild yeasts, or brettanomyces, to see what flavors the develop during fermentation. This bottle holds the results of a single strain fermentation with brett, Claussenii inside of a fresh Minnesota and Missouri White Oak Barrel.

Our take on an All-american Cream Ale. This beer was brewed in honor of the Inaugural Charm City Folk & Bluegrass Festival held at the brewery in April 2013 and headlined by the legendary banjo picker, Tony Triscka. Clawhammer is brewed like a traditional cream ale using Pale malt, honey and flaked maize but boasts a big floral nose from the addition of Columbus and mosaic hops.

This refreshing German style beer has a bright, straw-yellow hue, and a prominent but not extreme hoppiness. This style of beer is often compared to a German Pale Lager, although less bitter. This Kölsch was brewed using Belgian Pilsner Malt, Vienna Malt and Crystal Malt which provides for a lite beer with distinct malty notes. A combination of Magnum, Amarillo, Saaz and Styrian Goldings hops were used to provide a slight “bite” and floral aroma. Named for one of our local Ashe County Roads that provides safe travel to several of our employees and friends each day.

With uncharacteristically low bitterness, a well hidden 7.0% ABV, and a tropical fruity hop aroma; Clear Skies is our IPA celebrating all things outdoors. The complex hop aroma is a balancing act between farm-fresh fruits like honeydew and cantaloupe melons, orchard ripe citrus like ruby red grapefruit and pomelos, finishing with an assertive pine tree character that sticks to the palate like fresh sap on bark. British base malt contributes a clean profile akin to a recently scythed field of wheat that subtly travels along the flavor profile start to finish. With its ever so soft bitterness, incredible drinkability, and complex hop bouquet, we recommend pairing Clear Skies IPA with great weather and even greater friends.
