Smoked Frau Blücher! Oktoberfest

Did somebody say “Frau Blücher?” (Neighhh!) Enthusiastic movie buff and FSB brewmeister, Herr Darren Link, is giddy to introduce this Young Frankenstein-inspired first-ever FSB small-batch beer! So go ahead and say it…you know you want to! “Smoked Frau Blücher!” (Neighhh!) A traditionally brewed Oktoberfestbier and then, after tireless experimentation, this beer is given new life with a Fifth Street Brewpub-twist of oak smoked wheat. Yeah, we know what you’re thinkin’, Technically this is not a true Märzenbier. However, be assured that the dark copper color promises all the full-bodied, rich, toasty flavors of fall you would expect. With “Smoked Frau Blücher!” (Neighhh!), you get the added bonus of the perfectly balanced taste of oak with a mild hop profile that drinks very easy. Prost meine Damen, Herren…und Pferde! Smoked Lager

An historic specialty of the city of Bamberg, this type of beer is based on an old German legend. An accidental fire in a small regional brewery exposed the stored malt to the smoke for several hours. Because the brewer did not have the money to afford a new batch of malt, he was forced to use the smoked malt in his beer production. To his surprise, the townspeople loved the newly created beer; which in return became a new beer style in Germany. During the production of our smoked lager, we use a beechwood-smoked malt from a famous German malt house. This dark brown lager gives off a smoky and meat-like aroma. The complementary flavor follows the aroma characteristics with a balancing blend of smoke and malt along with a slight bitterness.

Smoked Lager

This beer just needs one word - BACON. Rauchbiers are originally from Southern Bavaria where the Malster smokes the malt over Beachwood. It is smoky and woody up front and finishes clean just like a good lager should. You'll find this lager during the summer months in the Beergarden.

Smoked Lager

Our Smoked Lager has a rich and robust flavor, medium body, and about 5.5% alcohol. It is a copper gold beer with smoky notes in the aroma. If you’ve never tried a smoked beer, the flavor is unlike any beer you’ve ever had. It’s like a smoky scotch without the burn, or Canadian bacon without the pig. The flavor is a complex blending of sweet smoked malt and crisp German hops. The Lager was brewed to commemorate our 1100th batch of beer.

Smoked Marzen

When the weather is right, there’s nothing like an Oktoberfest/Märzenbier and all its malty glory. But why make yet another Märzen that gets lost in the shuffle? We decided to include some smoked malt, actually a part of some traditional Märzen recipes, to set ours apart. There’s still a rich, sticky-sweet malt chararcter, and a deep ruby color, but the smoked edge adds a fun turn to the flavor profile and also dries out the mouthfeel a bit.

Smoked Porter

The porter is an old style that originated over three centuries ago in England. A smoked flavor interacts nicely with the sweetness. This is a moderately bitter beer, although the bitterness is undermined by the low hop aroma and flavor. The overall impression is of a traditional English porter, moderately dark, with roasted flavorings, and a little maltiness thrown in. A great beer for black and tans.

Prior to brewing our Smoked Porter, Matt selects specialty malts to be smoked over an open flame, imparting a unique flavor profile in the porter. The malts are smoked using apple and hickory wood for a full 72 hours. Spring House Brewing Co. chose to smoke the grain in a local smoke house that dates back to the late 19th century. This one-of-a-kind smoke house imparts layers of smoky depth to the beer that cannot be replicated. Enjoy!

Smoked Porter

Brewed especially for 12 Sheets, this robust mahogany hued ale boasts quite a unique falvor. As the velvety liquid cascades across the palate you’ll taste something familiar, bacon! Now, you’ll never believe us, but we assure you no pigs were harmed in the making of this beer. This brew has a malt forward recipe that calls for 3/4 of the total amount of grain to be slowly smoked over Beechwood. English Cara, Dextrin, and Chocolate malts provide sweetness and color to merry with the “BBQ” background. Though hops are used to balance, they take a back stage to the wonderful flavors and aromas that only slow smoking produce. One sip of this brew and you’ll be saying “I can’t believe it’s not bacon”!
