Electric Ray - Beer Camp Across America

As ever, San Diego’s Ballast Point looked to the sea for the inspiration behind Electric Ray. A play on the fish’s scientific name—Torpedo californica—this beer pays homage to our mutual home state, as well as to our Hop Torpedo, the source of much of the big flavor in this high voltage, hop-forward Imperial Pale Lager. Ballast Point brought their homebrewing dreams to the big leagues and started brewing professionally, but they never forgot their roots. They still run a successful homebrewing supply shop in San Diego. A love for hops and the ocean inspire incredible brewed and distilled offerings, and their one-of-a-kind labels boast some beautiful, and sometimes gnarly-lookin’, fish.

Electrostatic Ale

An unfiltered craft beer, this French Farmhouse ale is brewed with Pilsnermalz, malted white and dark wheat, a touch of bittering hops and just enough spicy hops to add aroma. Enjoy the intriguing subtleties of its character, its sweet fruity esters, earthy farmhouse yeast flavors, and light sour snap, all derived from the traditional 4 ingredients: grain, water, yeast and hops. Just as we depend on these four basics for our signature notes, we leave it to our signature fermentation process to yield light, playful bubbles. You won’t miss Electrostatic’s sizzling sparks of flavor.

Elegans Saison

Saison is a classic Belgian beer style traditionally brewed by farms to refresh the many seasonal workers. This style is renowned for its complex fruitiness and aroma. Elegans Saison (6.1% ABV) is a smooth ruby red colored winter version brewed with Pineapple Sage, an herb from the mountains of Central America long used as a tension reliever. Pineapple sage (salvia elegans) imparts delicate fragrances of lemongrass and tangerine to compliment the bready malt aroma and caramelized sugar flavors. A balanced bitterness ends each sip and cleanses the palate, leaving you thirsty for more.

Element 115 Lager

The name Element 115 comes from an undiscovered element on our periodic table. UFO experts claim that it is an essential component that allows UFOs to fly. The brew represents a truly unique American beer style known as California common. This San Francisco style lager is a deep amber color, full of malty goodness and assertively hopped for an exceptionally balanced and smooth beer. This brew marries the full malt character of ale with the smoothness of lager. This beer goes great with just about any food, but try it with your favorite entree slathered in BBQ sauce or a spicy Asian dish. Serve cold, of course.

Elemental Ale

Brewed only once a year at peak hop season, this beer is made with 400 pounds of freshly picked, "wet" Sterling hops from Goschie Farms in Silverton, OR. The hops were only 3 hours from the vine when they went into the kettle. The mash tun was also used as a hop back, holding 300 pounds of hops!!! This beer features a huge floral, spicy, grassy aroma with a firm malt background and a huge, snappy hop finish.

Elemental Pilsner

Our Elemental Pilsner was the California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition’s Second Place for Best of Show in 2010, beating 37 other gold medal winning beers and hundreds of entrants all together. No wonder. We created this German Pilsner as a classic Lager Bier to offer crisp refreshment with full-bodied satisfaction. Lightning’s uniquely robust combination of German Pilsnermalz, German noble hops, and select Bohemian lager yeast achieves complexity coupled with hop spiciness. The spritely tang quenches thirst—a storm surge of flavor, ending in a brisk bite. A bright white, lacey head tops off this award-winning session beer. By using only natural carbonation, we keep both the taste and the look clean. Lightning Elemental Pilsner is brewed in keeping with the Reinheitsgebot, the Bavarian Beer Purity Law of 1516. It is best to drink Elemental Pilsner when fresh, we only release when it is ready for optimal enjoyment!

As ruthlessly pointless as analyzing the lyrics from this beer's namesake, don't bother climbing up the Eiffel Tower to reach for its sophisticated tasting notes. Waiting for them to jump out is like sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun. There are perfectly subtle hints of citrus and melon, but no certain special twist. Just a classic, West Coast style IPA designed to be a refreshing summertime beer for us hopheads! Elevation 2013

Elevation 2013 is a barrel aged Strong stout. Barrel aging will impart a bourbon character of wood, coconut, vanilla, caramel, licorice, brown sugar and cinnamon. These flavors will be noticeable in the aroma and aftertaste. Barrel aged beers are very complex and intense. They should be enjoyed over a longer period of time to allow the beer to warm up and change in complexity.

Eleven

Our Eleventh anniversy ale, released in July 2006 only is a Triple IPA made exclusively with Phoenix hops. Phoenix is another one of those hops with low cohumulone levels, which means when used in very large quantities (as we do in Eleven) the hops flavor is very smooth, not a hint of harshness for the enormous amounts of hops in the brew. As with all of our Anniversay ales, this one will age fantastically and will never be made again, as each anniversary is an entirely different brew. Get it while you can and lay some down!

Eleventh Anniversary

The Goal: To create complexity centering on oak, in a multitude of forms, by brewing high gravity beers in complementary styles, aging them in different barrel formats and then blending them together to achieve new harmonious flavors. The Puzzle: Blend these various components (or lots) to create a synergistic whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. This has once again been done with the help of a few of our neighboring Paso Robles winemakers who are practicing experts in the art of blending. The Inspiration: Firestone Walker’s oak brewing tradition and our connection with winemaking. More specifically: a study of Port wine (solera) blending tradition and how it could be applied to brewing. Of course historically, brewing is also deeply rooted in the alchemy of blending. The Barrels: The individual lots were aged in oak barrels, most of which were hand selected from premium Kentucky spirits producers by Tom Griffin, who is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about bourbon barrels and beer. Each barrel lends its own unique influence to the final blend. Tom delivered some real treats this year including a number of charred barrels that were first filled with bourbon in 1991… The year I turned 21!
