Wheat Love

Bell’s Wheat Project (2005) is an experimental foray into the development of complex flavors in beer. The Project comprises five new ales, four in series and one specialty strong product. The first four, Wheat 2, Wheat 4, Wheat 6 and Wheat eight are all made using 55% Wheat (either wholly or mostly malted) and 45% Barley malt. The barley malt makeup is exactly the same in each of the four and consists of three different malts. The total amount of grain in each of the four is also exactly the same, so each of them should have a virtually identical original gravity. The type and amount of hops in each of the four is exactly the same. And the processing through the brewhouse and fermentation is also exactly the same. The changing factors between the ales are the composition of the 55% of wheat used and the type and number of yeast strains used. In Wheat 2 the 55% of wheat is made up of two different kinds of wheat malt, and this ale is made with two different yeasts. Wheat 4 is made with four different wheats and four yeasts. Wheat six and eight made with six and eight wheats and yeasts respectively. The final product, Bell’s Wheat Love Ale, is made with the eight yeasts of Wheat eight and is a strong, but relatively light colored,

Wheat Wacker

The dog days are back. No more snow, maybe a light rain here or there, but the time to exit the hibernating hovel is now. Allergies be damned, it's time to break out those shades and soak in the sun. Whether your idea of enjoying the longer days include gardening, lawn work, or just plain relaxing, we offer for you the Wheat Wacker, light in body but hoppy enough to know that this isn't any normal lawnmower beer. On the west coast, we are partial to our hoppy beers, but love to experiment in the Belgian fashion. By combining the sessionability of a witbier and the citrus qualities of Pacific Northwest hops, it gratifies on all fronts, including the warm fronts. Is it a Belgian IPA, not really; a hoppy wit, maybe? Perfect for the summer, we think so. Pilsner and wheat malt give the beer a light golden color with a subtle hint of clove and fresh cut grass. Blending European noble and Pacific Northwest hops, the flavor is moderately spicy and citrusy. Dry hopped like an IPA, fruity apricot notes intermingle with Belgian Yeast esters.

Wheat Wine Ale

Smuttynose Wheat Wine Ale is a unique hybridization of two well-known beer styles, combining the rich, voluptuous taste of a traditional barleywine with the subtle, tart flavors of an American wheat ale, topped off with a healthy dose of crisp, herbaceous hops. The much-anticipated debut edition of Smuttynose Wheat Wine, brewed and bottled early in 2005, was delayed for nearly a year due to problems stemming from the federal label approval process. The Tax and Trade Bureau (formerly ATF) rejected our original label approval application, claiming that use of the word wine in a beer name would confuse and mislead consumers and retailers. We didn't agree (barleywine, anyone?) and appealed their rejection. Ours is the first, but definitely not the last, wheat wine application the federal government has seen, so they had to create new guidelines regarding the use of this name. We did prevail, at last, and the issue has been put to rest, and although there are several outstanding examples of this style offered at brewpubs, we are pleased to say that Smuttynose Wheat Wine Ale was the first commercially bottled Wheat Wine on the market. Wheatfish Wheat Lager

Combining the best aspects of three major types of beer, Wheatfish is brewed like a German wheat beer, cold-fermented, aged like a lager, and hopped (three separate additions of Cascade hops) like an American Ale. The wheat contributes a full body and light spiciness, the hops give citrus hints and the finish is crisp and smooth. Wheatfish is low in bitterness and extremely drinkable.

Wheelhouse Wit

As Greg our brewer has made multiple Wit beers, this one was right in his wheelhouse. It is a Belgian wit, which is similar to a German wheat beer, but spiced with bitter orange peel, sweet orange peel and coriander. For yeast, he used the Forbidden Fruit Belgian yeast strain; the malt has pilsner, wheat and oats and the hops are 100% Northern Brewer hops. It is served in our 22oz hefeweizen glasses and is quite refreshing!

Where the Helles Bill?

“Where the Helles Bill?” is a German style Helles lager: Hell is the German adjective for “light,” while Helles is a noun used in the sense of “a light one.” This refers to the color of the beer only, which has a light straw-blond color. It has a slight note of hops with a mild malt accent. GABF medal winner: GABF 2004 Gold medal GABF 2009 Silver medal GABF 2003, 2008 Bronze medal

Where The Helles Summer?

Where the Helles Summer? is a classic German style lager. These beers originated in the 19th century as a response to Pilsener beers from Czech brewers. Helles is German for “bright.” In the brewing world we translate it as “light” – light in color and light in alcohol. Where the Helles Summer? is a clean & bready “beer drinker’s beer” balanced with austere noble hop varieties. It’s malt-forward and forward thinking to the warmer days just ahead.
