Our hoppy, American Brown Ale tip toes on the thin between hop bitterness and malt flavor like no other in it’s class. Consigliere, a dark sour beer, is fermented with Brettanomyces yeast and Lactobacillus bacteria and aged in oak barrels. This assertively tart sour beer will have your mouth salivating from your first to last sip.

Conspiracy Belgian-style Black Beer is the result of a collaboration between Midnight Sun brewers Gabe Fletcher and Ben Johnson and Pelican Pub (Pacific City, OR) brewer Ben Love. These brewers conspired during barley wine fest week to brew up a deviously delicious dark Belgian-style beer. Conspiracy is opaque black with a creamy beige head. Black malt shrouds it in mystery; the Belgian yeast imparts intriguing flavor; the alcohol adds danger. If you're up for this mission, watch your back. Conspiracy will be released in Anchorage and Portland in April 2007.

Contact High is our summer seasonal inspired by the American craft movement. We made this wheat ale exciting by adding pacific northwest hops and dry hopping with orange zest. Contact high pours a bright orange hue with a bit citrus aroma. citrus zest + hops + wheat = summer.

Brown Ale W/Rasins & Peanut Butter

Clover honey added during the boil contributes color and complexity but adds no sweetness to the beer as the sugars are broken down during fermentation. Look for whispers of apricot and nectarine on the palate, mixed with the floral aroma of the hops grown in northern Michigan.

Brewed in collaboration with friends from Rule29. Aromatic spiced hop and phenolics with a lingering hint of blackberry. Subtle dark fruit and traditional clove sweetness balanced throughout, with a honey-dried finish.

A Bagby take on a Cream Ale named after Continental Motors who previously occupied this site. Mimics a lighter lager but with that ale sweetness instead of a dry lager finish.

Continuum is a traditional German-Style 12˚Plato Pilsner brewed using traditional ingredients. Starting with a blank water profile, we were able to emulate a soft continental European water character. This helps to accentuate a soft and round hop character while reducing perceived bitterness of the German tradition and Czech Saaz Hops. To add more backbone to the malt character, we run a 3 hour boil (Maillard Reaction) to caramelize and accentuate the German Pilsner malt which has a round and slightly bready mouth feel compared to US 2-row barley commonly found in most ale. This is a West Coast-brewed traditional German-Style Pilsner to enjoy as time flies.

Black Market’s hoppy and toasty spin on the California Common. It is a refreshingly malty, yet hearty beer, not so “lawn-mower” style for summer. With multiple Northern Brewer hop additions, our Contraband exhibits characteristics of California Common without being simply “common.”

Contradiction Black IPA has a strong hoppy aroma consisting of pine, grapefruit and citrus with hints of sweet caramel, toffee and chocolate from the malt. These same flavors are present when tasting the beer with a more pronounced chocolate flavor. Hints of cherry, raisin and spice also come through for a complex and refreshing beer.

Loaded with hops like an IPA, yet drinks like a Pale Ale, we simply decided to call it a Strong Pale Ale. The fragrant, earthy citrus laced nose is instantly detectable. Large amounts of toasted grains and high alpha Simcoe hops form a perfect union that creates the cool sensation of toasted sourdough covered with zesty grapefruit hop marmalade. Made exclusively for the City Park Grill. ControversiALE was one of Shorts first beers and was made and named for the City Park Grill in Petoskey. Here is an excerpt from the Petoskey news explaining why Frank is Hangin: It is said that the ghost of Frank Fochtman, former owner of the City Park Grill in Petoskey, haunts the establishment today. Manager Jason Septic said it is rumored that Fochtman hung himself in the basement, when it was named Grill Cafe. ”I know many people who’ve just had a weird sensation or feeling that there’s someone else down there,” he said, adding that his hair has stood up on the back of his neck on occasion when down in the basement. The ghost has on occasion been blamed for broken glasses, when they would just snap as they sat on the table. ”They seemed to, when just sitting on the table, break where the stem meets the glass,” Septic recalled. However, despite some broken stemware, Fochtman — commonly just called Frank by the staff — does not seem to have a mean or negative presence. ”My personal feeling is that he’d be here, just watching over the place,” Septic said.

We really wanted to pay homage to the American Spirit with this American Amber Ale. We infused it with a special blend of black tea that is a representation of what our fore fathers enjoyed while they were boycotting the British taxation. The tea introduces refreshing notes of strawberry, maple, and citrus. Celebrating our Nation’s “melting pot” origins, malt from 5 separate countries was used to develop this beer’s unique character. This beer will delight your palate while being enjoyed on a warm summer night out on your porch.
