Traditional English ESB (extra special bitter)

For our ESB, we used some of its English roots to bring a little England to you! We use British 2-row malts to create authentic, satisfying sweetness. Toasty, caramel undertones pair with a moderate hop load that provides the earthy bitterness and balance that defines this brew. The traditional characteristics of this beer combine with our clear mountain water and signature brewing techniques to turn this ESB into a must try!

Maybe it’s the fact that we don’t brew our Extra Special Bitter (ESB) very often that makes it so special or maybe it’s just because it tastes so great. Regardless, we think you’ll find it to be an extraordinary drink. A World Beer Cup winner and beer enthusiast all-time favorite, this traditional English-style ale is made with 2-row pale and English crystal malt which is balanced by copious amounts of English hops. Our version of the full-bodied ale uses both Kent Goldings and Fuggles to impart a rich hop taste. So crack open a fresh jug of ESB, slice off a tasty piece of Gouda, sit back and enjoy this unapologetic, mouth-puckering, bitter, handcrafted ale.

Bitter is a traditional English pub draught. Extra Special defines a stronger, maltier version. Our bitter is brewed using generous amounts of malt and kettle hops. This ale leaves the drinker with a hop aftertaste balanced with the sweetness of the malt. Gold Medal Winner at the 1991 Great American Beer Festival and Best of Show at the Indiana State Fair 1999.

Though "bitter" is in the name, don’t be fooled. This style of beer is lower in hops than a IPA and emits a more balanced tone to be enjoyed by a variety of beer indulgers.

Bitter, which accounts for 40% of draught sales in England, usually comes in three strengths. Ordinary, Best Bitter and Extra Special Bitter. Our ESB is a deep copper coloured, malty ale, moderately hopped with a classic Golding variety of hops.

This brew is Cave Ale's bigger brother. Nice caramel and malty flavors at the beginning and finish with a nice earthy bitterness

A smooth english style ale that is "bitter" in name only. Abundant hop aroma and flavor hover above the rich malty sweetness. Fruity esters round out the flavor profile.

Tons of hop character but very low bitterness due to late hop additions in the kettle and whirlpool. Dry hopped twice; once during primary fermentation, once during aging.

This beer is not even ready to brew. It is based on a homebrew we brewed back in 2004 that had a calculated ABV of 21.4% ABV. We are experimenting with various brewing techniques to see if we can brew this beer on the Craft Brewery scale. We think we can brew it, but can we afford the truck load of ingredients it will take?

A Hop Heads Delight with a strong hop character. At 9.5% abv. this is a ‘get your motor running’ beer with a blend of Summit, Nugget, and Cascade hops.
