While most savvy beer consumers have heard of Belgian Dubbels, Tripels and Quadruples, few have ever had a Belgian-style Enkel, meaning “Single”. This is an ale rarely, if ever, brewed on the West Coast, let alone America. Typically, Monk’s Lunch is brewed only at Trappist Monasteries for the monks to enjoy with meals. They often drink only half a bottle with lunch and the rest with supper, despite the beer’s low alcohol content. This beer is modest in strength, robed in warm, golden hues and soft on the palate with a smooth, dry finish.

Single Hop Series Our single hop series has been a delicious and interesting experiment into the diverse world of hops. Following an identical recipe but only changing one variable each time (the hop) we've been able to study the exact aromatics and flavours imparted by specific varieties. Not unlike the series launched by Mikkeller, here at Bellwoods our Monagamy brews are all about settling down with one love. Yes, when ordering this beer in the brewpub the jokes are endless (ie. “I'm not so sure about monogamy” or “I tried monogamy once and never really liked it” or the oft hilarious “I guess I'll have it because my girlfriend/boyfriend is sitting beside me”) but stop being a wise-ass. Even the polygamous can't deny the allure of this beer.

Two year old Nantucket Flemish-style red aged on whole sour cherries for 10 months. This is similar to sipping the idea of what a "cherry" is... UNREAL.

Belgian-style lager w/ chrysanthemum

This pale, crisp, Dortmunder-style lager is a contemporary recreation of a classic style. It is made simply from German Pilsner, Vienna and Chit malt—with liberal doses of German Magnum, Opal and Perle hops. The flavor is well balanced between sweet, bready malt and bright herbal hop character.

An English Pale Ale

This Russian Imperial Stout is an intensely flavorful beer. Chocolaty, roasty, fruity, and bittersweet, with a hidden alcohol presence. This beer was designed to be sipped slowly on a cool evening in a nice cognac glass. Let it warm up to get the full flavor. This beer won Best in Show at the 2005 NJ State Fair when Brian was home brewing.

An imperial porter featuring strong chocolate and roast flavors with a touch of red fruit.

A Pacific Northwest style IPA. It pours a deep amber color with hints of Pine, Resin, and Grapefruit on the nose. There is a caramel sweetness in the body with intense grapefruit on the finish. This medium bodied full flavored IPA says goodbye to summer and hello fall.

Monteith's Summer Ale is a refreshingly different beer. The opportunity to rediscover some flavour highlights of beer styles enjoyed on summer days past, and bring them back to life. At the end of last century, in England, Europe and the Americas and in New Zealand, there was still an adherence to brew with barley, wholesome grains, hops and other traditional brewing spices. Monteith's Summer Ale is a bright gold beer with great body from four different malts. Spiced with a single hop variety and a touch of history - a little Rata honey. Subtle, but enough to make all the difference. The result is a truly refreshing herbal spiced beer brewed for the Summer Season - a splendid thirst quencher. Monteith's Summer Ale enjoyed ice-cold with a simple range of fruits, perhaps refreshing wedge of orange or lime. Alternatively, match with summer salads and stir-frys to complement the light flavours.

Monticello Reserve Ale is inspired by what was produced and consumed regularly at Monticello. It is made from a combination of wheat and corn, lightly hopped. Brewing beer was an important plantation activity at Monticello. Beer, one of the “table liquors” served with meals, was a staple of the Jefferson household. Records go back to 1772, when Jefferson’s wife Martha oversaw the periodic brewing operations, producing 15 gallon casks of small beer – beer with low alcohol content – about every two weeks.

Next in our Canvas Series is Montmaretto. This Barrel-Aged American Sour undergoes secondary fermentation on a pound-per-gallon of Montmorency Cherries. A portion of this beer was also aged in barrels with almonds to impart an Amaretto character to the final blend.

Montmorency and Balaton® cherries from Michigan were added to mature, sour, barrel-aged beer and allowed to referment to dryness. Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and 100% naturally conditioned.
