Black Plague Stout

Derives its name from the historical fact that at one time in Europe beer was about the only safe liquid to drink. Black Plague is Irish style dry stout brewed only in fall and winter and only in small batches to ensure the freshness so paramount to such an intensely roasted beer.

Black River Gumbo Stout

This dark deliciousness is named after the gumbo dirt of the Des Moines River bottom which nourished our Peace Tree and is now used as the surface for Knoxville’s famous Sprint Car track. Instead of using traditional ale yeast required of a stout, a Belgian yeast was used to add complexity. This stout is brewed with high quality pale malt, three roasted malts and two caramel malts. The dark roasted caramel malts contribute to the chocolate and toffee characteristics. Three varieties of hops contribute to the bitterness and aromas of this beer.

Black Rock Irish Stout

The ‘Black Rock’ is a landmark for mariners at the outermost part of Dungarvan harbour, situated just between the Copper Coast and Helvick Head. This is a full flavoured, smooth, dry stout that has been described on more than one occasion as “the way stout used to taste”. Made from roasted barley which gives a rich, chocolatey flavour complemented by herbal hints and notes of vanilla and aniseed. This is a medium-bodied stout with a light carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel. Ideally this stout should be served in the traditional south eastern way which is ‘off the shelf’ — ie. at room temperature.

Black Rye

We’ve reached into the vault and pulled out a cult classic from years ago. Before Black IPAs were all the rage, we made a dry-hopped dark ale with copious amounts of rye malt. Black Rye is a perfectly balanced blend of German- and American-grown hops, premium 2-row barley and heavily kilned rye and wheat malts. As with many of our offerings, there’s no style category that can contain this beer. It’s an original.

Black Rye Bock

This dark lager combines the characteristics of three winter beer styles. All three of these styles traditionally come from the colder harsher areas of Europe. The styles are (1) Black Beer (aka schwartzbier) originating from the former East Germany); (2) Rye Beer which at one time was only made in hardier areas of Eastern and Baltic Europe; and (3) Bock Beer which is widely known as a higher alcohol lager of Northern Germany. Our Black Rye Bock has a distinctive bitter chocolate palate and black color reminiscent of a black beer. The spiciness from the rye malt shines through in the flavor. The high alcohol balanced with malty sweetness rounds out this cold season bock. Smooth drinking with a punch makes this lager a perfect quaffer for our Arctic winter. 6.2% alcohol by volume.

Black Rye IPA

Loaded with flavor and complexity, this ale breaks the barriers of style guidelines. The nose comes off sweet, with hints of chocolate and orange. The rye helps build the body while the dark malts impart color and bold roasty, coffee notes. Early additions of Centennial hops build a nice bitter profile while the Bravo hops impart that lovely citrus balance.

Black Sails IPA

Black Sails - the beer brewed in a very contradictory style. The contradiction is in the name of the style - Black IPA or "Black India Pale Ale". The history of this style is not very long - it started just a few years ago. It all started in US and doesn't have any connection to India despite the name. The authors of the style tried to brew a beer which was very similar to IPA in terms of aroma and taste but had a deep black color. The problem which the brewer encountered was that dark malts used to brew dark beer tend to add a coffee-chocolate-burnt flavors and aromas - the characteristics usually not associated with real IPA. Our beer has a distinctive aroma of citruses, tropical fruits, lemon, mango and a bit of pines, having a dry bitter taste full of hops. And a very very light touch of chocolate. But if you drink it with you eyes closed it would be very challenging to discover what is the color of the beer - black beer is usually associated with porters and stouts. The name sends us to those years when Caribbeans were full of pirates, most of them were from England.
